Two days before Thanksgiving, my husband Mike slid a $20 bill across the table with a smug grin.<\/div>\n
\u201cHere, make Thanksgiving dinner with this,\u201d he said, all proud of himself.<\/div>\n
I laughed, thinking it was a joke. \u201cMike, $20? That won\u2019t even cover a turkey. And your mom, dad, and brothers are coming too!\u201d<\/div>\n
He shrugged. \u201cWell, Mom always made amazing dinners with no money. Figure it out. Don\u2019t embarrass me in front of my family.\u201d<\/div>\n
I stared at him, my blood boiling. After years of hosting his family, cooking, cleaning, and bending over backward, THIS was the thanks I got?<\/div>\n

I was done. Of course, I played the dutiful wife, nodding and saying I\u2019d handle it. But secretly, I used my own savings to plan the most unforgettable Thanksgiving his family had ever seen\u2014with a little \u201csurprise\u201d for dessert. \"\u2b07\ufe0f\"<\/span><\/div>\n

When my husband Mike tossed $20 at me and demanded I cook a Thanksgiving feast for his family, I realized I was done being his personal chef, maid, and doormat. He thought I\u2019d let it slide, but I planned to serve him something unforgettable this Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

For two years, I bent over backward to keep Mike and his family happy. But every meal I cooked and every spotless room I cleaned only seemed to remind them of what they thought I owed them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So, this year, I decided it was time to show them just how much they\u2019d underestimated me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Then, little by little, things started to change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At first, it was the small things like Mike leaving his dirty laundry wherever he pleased or expecting me to handle the groceries. But then his parents, Maureen and Richard, began treating me like I had married into their family to become their unpaid chef and housekeeper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Richard wasn\u2019t much better. He was always \u201cjoking\u201d about how I should consider opening a catering business since I was already \u201crunning one for free.\u201d I tried to let it roll off my back, but their constant remarks and expectations were exhausting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The worst, though, was a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dropping by, of course, meant staying for hours and criticizing my cooking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

When I suggested ordering takeout, Maureen gasped, \u201cTakeout? For family? Oh no, Alyssa. You\u2019ve set the bar too high to lower it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Mike just shrugged and said, \u201cYou\u2019ll figure it out. You always do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Why didn\u2019t I answer back? Why didn\u2019t I tell them to cook their own meals? The truth is, I wanted to keep the peace. I wanted to keep Mike happy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But the love I had for him wore thinner with every passing day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
